Shaping masculinity through parenting: The mediating role of authoritative style across family structures

This study aims to explore the relationship between authoritative parenting and gender role identity formation among male and female university students particularly masculine gender role orientation. A quantitative cross sectional research design was used and sampling of 370 male and female students was done by systematic sampling technique. The data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Results revealed a positive statistically significant correlation between authoritative parenting by fathers and masculine gender role identity (p < .001). The findings imply that the following paternal styles (providing guidance and responding to demands, setting behavioral norms, and being open to children's views) are linked to higher levels of masculine gender role orientations among university students. The results suggest the importance of paternal socialization in the construction of gender role identities and the potential of responsive and supportive fathering practices to understanding gendered socialization processes. The study adds to the sociological perspective of gender socialization in the family, and offers empirical implications for parents, teachers, and practitioners who are worried about parenting and gender development.
